Life’s Soulless Vampires

Barren void
He walks through dusty sand
Awakened by the sound of rain
To find no rain falling
Alive with springtime in the setting sun
Positioned in the sky just so
No plants grow

The landscape changes to a parking lot
Both hotter and more ominous
The shimmering mirage in the distance
Revealing heat, imagination, nothing
Memories of happiness
Eaten by life’s soulless vampires
Turned into minions of suffering
Who wander off cliffs, forgotten

The ocean is a desert
Water, life-giving and cool
Deceptively refreshing
Never quenching any thirst
Requiring more and more
Worse than the desert
Because it makes him believe
It makes him hope
But will ultimately kill him
Just the same
